Untethered
Ever seen how an astronaut works outside the spacecraft to do a spacewalk? It’s a bit scary. They are in the darkness of space beyond the comfortable realm of gravity. We aren’t made to float around above the atmosphere. Yet, we have found a way.
The astronaut is tethered to the ship by a strong, expense cord. It is like an adult umbilical cord made by scientists. It can snap but usually only occurs by a violent jolt due to emergencies that Hollywood showcases in movies. If the cord actually broke, they now have jet packs to get back to the mothership. The worst-case scenario is a malfunctioned jet pack and a torn tether.
What a nightmare to fly off into outer space rotating into nothingness. Depending on the direction you are going and the speed you could freeze to death, burn up, or run out of oxygen. Possibly the mothership could come rescue you and still have enough gas to get back. That tether is pretty important!
I have met many people who seem, metaphorically, like an untethered astronaut. When you observe the continual poor choices they make, listen to their beliefs about the world, and see into their heart, it is as if they are flying off into nothingness and one doesn’t know when it is going to end. It doesn’t mean they are disconnected from reality, but they are disconnected from purpose. Honestly, I feel like this describes my adult life were it not for a relationship with Jesus Christ. I’m not speaking of religion or rules or rigid asceticism. This is a Person that guides, directs, calls back, pursues, and sustains as the mothership.
Were it not for the tether that connects me to Christ; I would be way off course. In fact, I’m already prone to wander off every day I wake. The tether is a mixture of God’s Word/Message to us and the Spirit of God within me. I’m no better than anyone else, but I know where I’m going and when I get off track. There is a confidence that upholds peace through any circumstance and a conviction when I’m off course. It is fused with faith, but all belief in that which cannot be seen requires faith.
Are you tethered in this life? Do you know where you are headed? Do you know your purpose for why you are here? In a way, God is a like a mothership, and without help, we drift from Him daily. You can get back on track. Jesus Christ desires for you to know Him. If this subtle drift from purpose and reason sounds familiar to you, contact us. We are here to help. You were not meant to navigate this life alone with unanswered questions, untethered.
