Thoughts and Musings from City of Refuge Church

The Tri-unity of God

There have been many analogies that have been uttered to described the nature of God being three in One. Some have spoken of H2O being in the form of solid, liquid, and gas. Others have used the concept of the egg having a shell, white, and yoke. These do not do justice. We are comparing eggs and elements to the Creator of the Universe that made all things.

Some don’t believe in a divine being at all. Use your imagination on this one (I believe the One and only Divine Being gave you an imagination to use partly to realize His existence!) If there were a Creator of all that we know, we would have to respect their eternality, power, and ability to think up this universe. We could not make them conform to our liking. If their nature was something difficult to understand it would not mean they don’t exist or that they cannot be known. It would mean we have the choice to either accept who they are or not, but rejecting them would mean dismissing reality.

At City of Refuge (COR), we believe Jesus Christ was a real man that was God in the flesh. We believe that God is three equally divine Persons that are completely unified. We believe that He revealed Himself to be this way through signs and wonders that were evident to real people and recorded over several thousand years. We believe that He desires a relationship with us and has made this a possibility.

We believe that God revealed Himself by using the concept of being Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This does not mean three different gods. They are One but able to function separately and have different roles. They form an eternal community together. This means that when they created the world, they were never bored or lonely and never will be. They did not NEED anything or ANYONE. They desired to pour out their love and offer themselves to a creation that didn’t yet exist. God desired to fill the universe with His love and kindness and goodness.

It is not easy to understand, but it is possible to understand. If it is true, His nature being three in One not to mention His existence in general, He is worthy of honor. If we could explain Him away and fully understand Him, then it would seem as if He were more like a human and not worthy of respect.

The number one attribute of God mentioned in Scripture, revealed by God Himself is holiness. It is not love or power. Those are secondary to Him being holy. Holy literally means “set apart.” He is set apart from all other creation. There is no One like Him. Even the mystery of His Tri-unity sets Him apart from everything and everyone else.

At COR, we are continuing a series on what we believe regarding our faith. This Sunday, we are discussing the nature of God being Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We would enjoy your presence!
