Thoughts and Musings from City of Refuge Church

What is life?

What is life? Usually, we think of it as human existence or when an organism is alive. Yet, this is not what it means to have life. For one can be in a comatose state of existence or a miserable state but that is not life.

The biblical understanding of life is being in a personal, close, reconciled relationship with God. That means you do not have to have legs, arms, hair, health, personality, a spouse, children, money, or brilliance but if you connect with God through faith in Him…you have life. It also means, that you can have everything this world has to offer, but if you are not close to God you have death. Prestige, fame, pleasure, entertainment, and entitlement do not provide life, sustain life, or mean one has life. To be separated from God, even while on earth and even while one is having fun, is death.

Life and death are not about whether we exist on the planet now but did not 100 years ago and will not 100 years from now. It all comes down to relating to God. Life and death are a state of nearness and distance from an Individual. That nearness must include resolution, not just proximity. Even the devil gets close to God but not on good terms.

God is the Creator of all things. He made us to live. But living without God is not life. Even though we can breathe and even though we may feel like we are having the time of our life, we are only able to do so because He temporarily allows it. Even each beat of the heart is being allowed by God one more time as a gracious act. He allows us to continue on when we don’t desire Him in order to reveal how worthy He is to be desired. He longs for us to be with Him forever in the next age when all will be restored. In that time, there will be no suffering, betrayal, heartache, or loss. This is only true if one has a relationship with God. That is life!

Through His Son, Jesus Christ, God has paved the way for us to have life. At COR, we are continuing our series on What We Believe. We will be discussing Life Eternally Secure this Sunday. We invited you to join in the discussion. Let us know if you have any questions. We also enjoy praying. We know that many are struggling. Please contact us if you need prayer!
