Investments
We are always making investments. Whatever we spend our time on the most is an investment for good or bad. If you are into the stock market, it is all about where to place your resources wisely. In a capitalistic society, we often think of buying into a business or organization based on a physical product or liquid assets. Rarely do we think of the return of spending our time and resources on individuals. This is exactly what God thinks about constantly. He exemplified this when living on earth.
The King of Kings left it all to taste humanity. He left a safe, clean, and impeccable environment in which angelic beings were crying out to Him with respect and honor continuously. Notice that He didn’t ride in on a white horse with pomp and tell everyone to pay homage. His circumstances were humble, to say the least. While living as a human, Jesus Christ, did not have much stuff. During His ministry, He spoke of not having a place to lay His head (Matthew 8:20, Luke 9:58). Ironically, He was a carpenter’s son and could have built Himself a beautiful place indeed!
He did not amass wealth or horde trinkets. He was constantly giving and on the go. Yet, Jesus Christ was the most faithful steward of all time. The significance of that statement is that He spent His time investing in people not accruing affluence. He knew that the only thing that would last from this world to the next was the souls of individuals. He poured His life into humans, not shares. He was always on the go because He was always meeting with people for the benefit of those individuals, not some political empire.
The Bible does speak a lot about being a good steward of resources, though. We are also to have good work ethic and provide for those in our household as well as the impoverished in society. Spending our energy on people is not an excuse for laziness or neglecting the needs of family and the downtrodden. Most people understand this responsibility because they have to provide for themselves in the process. Yet, where is the vision for investing in people long term when there is no immediate return of assets?
Like the King of Kings, we have the opportunity to endow our time, resources, and skills in others around us even if there is no direct benefit to us. What if we could be considered just as much a faithful steward of people as we are of our stuff? Consider making an investment in someone around you. Pass on to them all you know about the Lord with the goal of leading them to do the same for someone else down the road. That is a stock market worth the risk. It is worth giving our lives to those that do not know the Lord personally or need a clearer understanding of Him. In all of eternity, what else could be more valuable? What other work will carry over in the afterlife?
