Hangry Jesus?
In the last post, the concept of being hangry was mentioned. Going without food for a couple of hours and arriving at a moment when you were anticipating a meal produces anger plus hunger equaling: hangry. While we are acting unconventional, it is who we are. Blast away the blue sky, the comfortable clothes, the savings account, and all that is secure. Our true colors come to the surface. When we are hangry, it is not just who we can be but who we have been underneath the surface all along. Don’t let status quo fool you.
Did you know that Jesus Christ had all the human weakness as we do such as being tired (John 4:6), thirsty (John 19:28), and hungry (Matthew 4:2)? But He never got hangry. Yes, He got hungry. Yes, He got angry. Yet, He never got hangry. How do I know this?
While Christ experienced hunger, He did not ever overindulge (Romans 13:14) and always had self-control (Hebrews 4:15). He also got angry many times (Mark 3:5, John 2:15) but He always manifested it for the right reason in the right way. That is the line of demarcation. When we get hangry, we lash out for silly reasons and in silly ways. Let’s face it; we often offend others when we do this. We say and do the unthinkable. Jesus Christ never transgressed another person (Philippians 2:3-8).
Once, He went 40 days without food (Matthew 4:2). No anger. Had you thrown Him thousands of Snicker bars, He would have refused. Why? His Father in heaven was guiding Him (Matthew 4:4) and had not given Him the green light to eat. Could He have eaten at any time during that long stretch? Sure. But He would not have been following the will of His Father. That is what He desires more than anything else in the universe, including food. He even said so (John 4:34, 6:38).
Wouldn’t it be nice to say that underneath the surface we are in total control! Throw anything at us, and we won’t lose it! What is so intriguing, is that Christ was in complete control because He was utterly dependent on God the Father and led by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:17-4:1). This is good news because you can be dependent on the same God and led by the same Spirit. If you are interested in taking back control (possibly just to stop being so hangry) let us know how we can help.
